KACC Show for May

What a great time I had last Saturday!  I was involved in a Four Woman Tangle Show with my sister Kristi Hansen, my niece Jerica Glick and my friend Priscilla Wright.  It was so fun because all three of my sisters, my mom, one niece and a nephew were in attendance.  Here's a picture my friend Cathy Martin took for me.

L-R me (Sharon), nephew- Dyllon Barber, sister-Kristi Hansen, niece-Jerica Glick, sister- Dona Glick, sister-Beverly Henley, mother-Mary Henley.

We had almost 50 pieces in our show!  My daughter Lyndsay Brockway came the Monday before to arrange and hang the show.  It was absolutely beautiful!  We had a great turn out, it was a lot of fun!

People would ask, what is Zentangle®?  Jerica was prepared with a cool sign to explain to those who didn't know what it is all about, see below!

West Texas Adventures!

Yep, that's what I said, West Texas!  The spot on the map is Midland.  I learned in Bible Study last week from a classmate that means, Land of No Trees.  And that's about right.  But, what is lacking in landscape, such as what I enjoyed in  Kerrville, people certainly try to make up for it with a smile and a welcome.  But, you know, that's what I have enjoyed wherever I have lived.  I'm not an army brat, but I've done my share of moving...but, all in Texas!  So, I am endeavoring to bloom where I am planted.  God reigns in my life, so I receive what I need to live my purpose.

The past 2 weeks I have worked hard to complete Tangle pieces for the Four Woman Tangle Show in Kerrville at the KACC.  I hope you can plan to stop by at the Artists Reception on May 3rd, Saturday from 1:00-3:00 pm.  I think we are going to have a very interesting show for you to feast your eyes on! (Here's a sneak preview of a few of my pieces, shhhhh)

I'd like to introduce you to the other three artists.  First let just say this Art Show is about Zentangle Inspired Art pieces. This is a meditative art form that has been developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas called Zentangle®.  Be sure to check out their website, www.zentangle.com, for more info.

Kristi is an amazing artist in every respect!  She's musical, drums and keyboard, and paints with acrylics.  She has really latched on to tangling!  She is going to Rhode Island in November to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher (just like her big sister...me!  :)  Anyone who purchases her pieces will be helping her fund her trip.  This is a very expensive seminar, but so totally worth it!  Kristi is a member of the Bastrop Art Guild and shows and sells pieces there.  She will have some of her tangled boxes at our show.  These boxes are each unique and one of a kind, totally HOT pieces.  She can hardly keep up with demand.  So, check them out early while they are available.

Jerica Glick is an Education Major at Texas Women's University.  She plans to teach Science and English as a Second Language.  Jerica is an amazing young woman.  She created Jeans for Jesse in high school.  This was to honor her close friend Jesse who lost her battle to cancer.  This was such a huge project!  They sold used jeans to raise money for the Children's Medical Center in Dallas. Even celebrities like Ellen Degeneras donated jeans.  In her senior year at Dr. John D Horn HS in Mesquite, TX, she was awarded two leadership awards The Principal's Award and The Light House Award. Now she's raising funds for a mission trip in June to Spain . Jerica is also a professional photographer.  All of the photographs are hers.  She has a very unique, individual way of capturing her subject. Jerica is so talented and giving.  (psst....she plays the harp!)  Jerica is one my other sister's daughter.  I hope you will get a chance to meet her at the reception!  In fact, all three sisters and my mother will be at the reception, they will all enjoy meeting you!

My friend Pris Wright is one of my previous Tangle Students.  She has a bent toward black and white abstract in previous art pieces.  I think you will enjoy her use of tangles. Pris is a retired School Administrator and now works with colleges doing supervision for students in addition to her art.  She has recently relocated to Ft. Worth from Kerrville to be closer to her family.  She also has plans to attend the Certified Zentangle Teacher seminar.

I am looking forward to a great exhibit.  Hope to see you there!

Zentangle Whilrlwind...well, it is March!

March 18 was the Zen & Zin.  We had such a good time!  Only Zen, no Zin.  We get a natural high just doing our art!  Here is a collage of the groups excellent efforts!

March 19 at Kerrville First United Methodist, I instructed some of my bible study group, Intro Class.

March 25, KACC Zendala Class.  The ladies were extremely proud of their Zendalas, as they well should be!

Then that afternoon, I hosted my first Open Class to previous students.  The project was an Exploding Box.  The most difficult thing to do here is to cut the squares to the specified dimensions.  But, then they all went together very nicely.  What a great way to display completed Tiles and Zendalas!

Black Tile Class...Someone's Watching Over Me

Have you ever experienced something and knew for certain that someone is taking care of you?  I had that very experience last Tuesday!  I was greeting my students for the day and they just kept coming!  I had confirmed with KACC, the art center where I have my classes, for 7 students.  No problem, plenty of supplies, an extra complete kit to spare.  But after 7 ladies walked into the door, another 5 came in!  I scrapped together enough supplies for the extra ladies, sans bags which were at home.  We just rearranged the room and made arrangements to get the bags to each one of them. Thank God!

It was a very energizing class! I taught using BLACK TILES.  Here is a class mosaic of the work, I included a few of mine also which illustrate other patterns taught in class.

Beautiful art created by twelve beautiful women!  We had a really good time using Vega, Crescent Moon, Printemps,(some of mine included Meer, Indy-Rella, and Cadent -variation, these were practiced in class). Supplies used:  black tiles, white charcoal, white jelly roll pens, soap stone sticks and a touch of a sparkle jelly roll pen. I always enjoy teaching these classes and discovering all of the differences in the tiles, even though everyone was doing the same lesson.  Cool, huh?

Next class:  March 18, 5:30-7:30 pm, Zen and Zin,  I bring the snacks you bring your drink.  A great way to end a work day.  The rest of the week will go a lot smoother when you take time for yourself!  Hope to see you there!  Please call KACC 830-895-2911 to sign upCost is $35.00 plus $10 for supplies.  If you have the black Micron supply kit you are all set.

Also, I'm planning a Zendala Class for March 25, 9:00 - 11:30 am. KACC, $35. for class, plus basic supply kit if you haven't been to one of my classes before. Sign up as soon as possible.  If I have a large class I want to get a bigger room.

Remember to take some time to tangle 2 untangle, you will be more relaxed, more focused and more creative!

Happy Tangling!

Happy Valentine's Day!

This will probably be one of those chilly Valentine seasons!  I remember one year my mother made me the prettiest dress for Valentine's Day.  It was red voile with white swiss polka dots, with little heart lace trimmed pockets.  It was so pretty and it ended up being really cold, windy weather!  A lot of factors involved to imprint that on my memory!  But the important thing to remember was how much my mother cared for and loved me!  She still does!  Valentine's Day must be important to my mother, because she will invariably send out valentine cards to all of the grandchildren...sometimes I still get one!  So, this year I will be making her one.  I think I will send her a Zentangle styled valentine.  What do you think about this one?  It will encompass the heart (love) and the precious sewing supplies.  Love you Mom!

Important date and note!  I will be doing a demonstration for the Kerrville Art Club on the Zentangle Method at 1:00, KACC.  Would love to have you there as a guest!
Also, at 9:00 that morning I will have a class using Renaissance Tiles, cost is $45. includes materials.  Bring a guest and you both get the class for $35 each.  Please call me or the KACC for registration.  My number 830-285-4199.

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Schedule Revision and....Garden Pests!

I had to revise my schedule.  I am learning a lot about starting a business!  Mostly, that I don't know!  I have a tendency to let my enthusiasm carry me away...and everyone else is left standing there. So, in an effort to be "more real", I have asked my friend, Executive Director of Kerr Arts Cultural Center, Debbie Minns, to help me.

I am cancelling the class for Feb. 4 and moving the Renaissance Tiles Class to Feb. 18. Then adding Tan and White Basics to March 4th.  I have not put All Black and the Open Afternoon into the new schedule, but will at a later date. I am also planning to offer Zendalas as a Beyond the Basics Class.  Bear with me as I learn how to get the word out, and organize these fantastic classes.  The Zen and Zin is still on for March 18th, 5:30-7:30 pm.  I am also working with a friend in Boerne to hold classes there.  I'm so excited about the possibilities! (Calm down, Sharon! lol)

Here are some tiles I have been working on this week.  I hope you get a kick out of them!  My sister thinks I should put them in a picture book.  We'll see.  By the way, I have been working on some illustrations for a book a friend and I will co-publish.  This will be my second book illustration gig.  OK!  Now for.....GARDEN PESTS! Some of these are actually helpful, not a gardener, so maybe I should actually title it Garden Critters.  But, right now I like the word pests!  :)
